Where You Are

Finding the right eating disorder therapist in Connecticut can feel overwhelming. Many practices have waitlists, limited specialization, or a focus on weight and BMI metrics that can be harmful to long-term recovery.

At Balanced Brain and Body, Connecticut residents have direct access to Kristen Forman, LCSW — a therapist who has spent her entire career focused on eating disorder recovery, rooted in evidence-based methods and the Health at Every Size® framework.

Because therapy is delivered via secure telehealth, you can access expert, compassionate care from Hartford, New Haven, Stamford, or anywhere in Connecticut without a commute or a waiting room.

Your first session is a 75-minute intake appointment. Kristen will take time to understand your history, experiences, and what recovery means for you specifically.

Ongoing 45- or 60-minute sessions — on a cadence that works for your life — using CBT, DBT, mindfulness, and HAES® principles tailored to your needs.

Our Approach

Rooted in Evidence. Guided by Compassion.

  • HAES®-Aligned & Weight-Inclusive

We follow Health at Every Size® principles, rejecting weight-centric approaches that can harm recovery. Your worth is not determined by your weight, and neither is your health.

  • Evidence-Based Modalities

Our treatment integrates Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and Mindfulness-Based approaches—proven methods for eating disorder recovery and emotional regulation.

  • Founder-Led Expertise

Kristen Forman has over 14 years of specialized experience treating eating disorders in both inpatient and outpatient settings. She completed intensive training in DBT and CBT-E (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy-Enhanced for Eating Disorders).

  • Virtual & Accessible

Anywhere in Connecticut, you can access expert care from the comfort and privacy of your home through HIPAA-compliant telehealth.

  • Neuro-Affirming & Compassionate

As a passionate advocate for neurodivergent individuals (shaped by her experience as a parent of a child with Autism Spectrum Disorder), Kristen brings deep empathy and understanding to clients of all neurotypes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers for Connecticut Residents

Is virtual therapy as effective as in-person?

Yes — and the research backs this up. Multiple peer-reviewed studies have found that telehealth therapy produces outcomes that are equivalent to in-person treatment for eating disorders, anxiety, depression, and related conditions. A landmark 2021 review published in the Journal of Eating Disorders found that CBT and DBT delivered via video demonstrated comparable effectiveness to face-to-face formats.

For many clients, virtual therapy is actually more effective — because you're already in your own environment, which can make it easier to open up, practice skills in real-time, and maintain consistency without commuting. At Balanced Brain and Body, we've seen clients across New Jersey and beyond make profound progress entirely through telehealth.

Is Kristen Forman licensed to provide therapy in Connecticut?

Yes. Kristen Forman, LCSW holds licensure in Connecticut, which means she is fully authorized to provide clinical therapy services — including eating disorder treatment — to residents of the state via telehealth. If you live in Connecticut, you are eligible to receive therapy (not just coaching) through Balanced Brain and Body.

What's the difference between therapy and coaching at Balanced Brain and Body?

Therapy is a healthcare service provided by a licensed clinician (like an LCSW) to diagnose and treat mental health conditions, including eating disorders. Therapy can address clinical symptoms, trauma, and psychological distress.

Coaching is a supportive, skills-based service focused on specific goals like mindful eating or intuitive eating principles. Coaching is not a substitute for therapy and is best suited for individuals with less severe concerns or those transitioning out of formal therapy.

At Balanced Brain and Body, clinical therapy is our primary service. Coaching is offered as a complementary support option for appropriate clients.

What technology do I need for virtual sessions?

Virtual sessions are held through a secure, HIPAA-compliant video platform. All you need is a smartphone, tablet, or computer with a camera and microphone, along with a stable internet connection. No special software downloads are required in most cases — you'll receive a private, secure link before each session.

We recommend finding a quiet, private space where you feel comfortable speaking freely. Many clients choose to use headphones for added privacy.

Do you accept insurance for Connecticut clients?

Balanced Brain and Body is an out-of-network provider, which means Kristen does not bill insurance directly. However, she can provide a superbill, a detailed receipt that you can submit to your insurance company for potential reimbursement.

Balanced Brain and Body also offers courtesy billing. After receiving payment we submit to insurance company for expedited reimbursement payment.

Many clients find that working with an out-of-network provider offers greater flexibility, privacy, and continuity of care without insurance company restrictions on treatment.

What therapeutic approaches do you use for eating disorder treatment?

Kristen is intensively trained in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy — Enhanced for Eating Disorders (CBT-E). Sessions also integrate Mindfulness, Mindful Eating principles, and the Health at Every Size® (HAES®) framework. All treatment is individualized — there is no one-size-fits-all protocol. Your goals and your story guide the plan.

Importantly, treatment at Balanced Brain and Body never focuses on weight or BMI as a measure of progress or health. Recovery is defined by your quality of life, your relationship with food, and your emotional wellbeing.

Is my privacy protected in virtual sessions?

This is exactly why virtual therapy is so valuable — and why Kristen obtained licensure in South Carolina. Access to specialized eating disorder care should not be limited by geography. Whether you're in a small town in the Pee Dee, a rural area of the Upstate, or a coastal community with limited local providers, virtual sessions with Balanced Brain and Body give you the same quality of specialized, HAES®-aligned care available to clients in major cities.

You deserve expert care. Distance should never be the reason you can't access it.

Do you offer therapy for adolescents in Connecticut?

Yes. Kristen Forman provides eating disorder therapy for both adolescents (age 11+) and adults. Adolescent therapy may involve family coordination and a collaborative treatment approach that supports both the young person and their support system. If you are a parent or guardian seeking support for a teenager in Connecticut, please reach out to discuss how care can be structured appropriately.
